Our Story
The Cross Church was born through much prayer during the years of 2006 and 2007 in Pensacola, Florida. A few believers began gathering weekly to pray, seeking the Lord to advance the gospel and build up healthy churches in Pensacola. Little did this small group expect that God would use the gathering itself as an answer to prayer.
Our church officially started in 2008 as a church plant sponsored by Grace Life of the Shoals from Muscles Shoals, Alabama. From the beginning our hope has been to glorify God by making disciples who enjoy Jesus together, rooted firmly in the Word-centered doctrines of the historic Reformed Baptist tradition.
With this aim to be a God-glorifying, Christ-enjoying, Bible-saturated, community-loving, gospel-advancing church, we started meeting in Pastor Jon Mark's living room with 9 people. By 2009, we had moved to the University of West Florida campus.
The church remained on the UWF campus for several years, preaching the gospel and making disciples, until 2012 when we became increasingly burdened for the vast needs in the inner city parts of Pensacola. At that time we replanted the church in the Brownsville community.
In 2021, after years of renting meeting places, we purchased and renovated our own building on North Palafox. We “gather” on the Lord’s Day, and throughout the week we “scatter” for discipleship in our City Groups, meeting in homes as small groups around the city.
The Lord has been relentlessly faithful and gracious to us over the years, and we are more satisfied in him than ever before. We can say, “the Lord is our Shepherd, we have no needs.” He has led us beside still waters, restored our souls, prepared tables before us in the presence of our enemies, and repeatedly made our cup to overflow, surely his goodness and mercy will lead us all the way home.
